For some reason, I keep returning to this photograph. I made it on the ferry to the Dutch Wadden island of Ameland, as it was about to embark. In hindsight, I would have framed it slightly differently, with a more downward angle, so that the chimney would nearly touch the upper frame border.
Doing so would have included more of the railing, which is just visible in the lower lefthand corner. I can’t recall if I could have kept the camera further forward to get rid of the railing in my frame, but it would have made composing the shot more difficult. The amount of usable shutter speed and aperture combinations is pretty limited when shooting medium format loaded with ISO 100 film on an overcast day, at least without a proper camera support system. So while the photograph is not perfect, I like it.
